About Liposuction

During the procedure, small discreet incisions are made in the skin so that a suction device called a “cannula” can be inserted underneath.
Fluid is then infiltrated into the tissue to allow access to the fat. The cannula is then passed into the areas of concern and the fat is removed.

before after liposuction procedure areas

What can I expect from liposuction procedure?

Liposuction addresses shape and contour of the target area. The final results depend on how the skin contracts around the treated area. Skin elasticity can be affected by weight gain and loss, sun damage and age. A thorough preoperative assessment is necessary in order to determine whether this is the right treatment for you.

Today, there are variations on the traditional liposuction procedure available as well.

  • Smart Lipo
  • Vaser
  • Ultrasonic
liposuction procedure risks

Before you have liposuction, be sure to understand its purpose as well as the risks

Liposuction helps to contour your body by removing stubborn deposits of fat from specific areas of your body.

This procedure is not a good option for weight loss. Once you are comfortable wtih its purpose, and have considered the areas of your body that you would love to see sleeker and slimmer, consider the potential risks of the procedure.

Like any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential side effects. Your surgeon will explain these to you in detail. You can expect swelling and bruising in the treated areas right after the procedure. The level of discomfort varies between individuals, but depends heavily on the amount of fat you have removed from your body.

liposuction cannula

How Is Liposuction Procedure Performed?

The surgeon makes a small incision in the skin. The exact location depends on the area of the body targeted for fat removal.

The surgeon inserts a cannula into the deeper layers of fat tissue. The goal is to breakup the fat cells by forcing the cannula to move through the cells repeatedly.

As fat cells break loose from the motions of the cannula, a syringe or pump suctions the loose fat out of the body. Once the correct amount of fat is removed, the cannula is removed and the incision is closed. The removed fat is discarded as required by law.

While the procedure may seem simple, it is actually quite complicated. One small mistake could lead to serious complications which put your life in danger.

liposuction will fat come back

Liposuction: Will the Fat Come Back?

Some people think that once fat cells are removed from an area of the body, their problem is solved; they are now slim and trim for life.

Unfortunately for all of us, this is just not so. The fat does come back – often in different places, but it will come back if healthy lifestyle habits are not maintained, and sometimes even if they are.

The weight doesn’t come back in the same places. This generally means you look better, more balanced and more proportional. Liposuction procedure is about contouring, not weight loss. It is about aesthetic symmetry.

Important Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon
Before Liposuction Procedure

It is important that your plastic surgeon answers all your questions before the surgery

  • You are a good candidate for a Miami liposuction if you have a minimal amount of excess skin and good skin elasticity. You are also a good candidate for this procedure if you have localized deposits of fat in your abdomen, arms, thighs, or neck that do not disappear with diet or exercise. However, you must also be in stable weight and not more than 20 pounds overweight.

  • The final results will be visible after six months when the swelling and bruising have already subsided. Expect to see a trimmer figure with a more defined muscle tone and reduced cellulite.

  • Your liposuction may be performed in an accredited hospital, a free-standing ambulatory facility, or an office-based surgical suite. Your surgeon should also be able to explain to you how the surgery will be performed, from administering anesthesia to closing the incision.

  • There are several liposuction techniques that your doctor can use to achieve your desired results. These include manual techniques like traditional liposuction, tumescent liposuction, super-wet liposuction, ultrasonic liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, laser liposuction, and LipoSelection. You and your doctor should decide upon it during your consultation.
